About Us

Martial arts at Shogun are like no other.

Our culture empowers students of all ages, cultivating a liberating environment guided by a friendly and inclusive community. Instructors, members, and students work together in trust and respect, growing confidence, skill, and resilience — all while engaging with an ancient art that strengthens the body, sharpens the mind, and equips students with life skills that extend beyond the dojo.

At Shogun, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every program is tailored to individual personality and ability, fostering ownership of physical, mental, and emotional growth. This safe, supportive environment nurtures strong friendships while developing disciplined, skilful martial artists.

The Shogun dojo welcomes you through a traditional Japanese garden, a tranquil retreat from the bustle of Puckle Street. Inside, state-of-the-art equipment and safety flooring ensure students train with confidence, focus, and protection at every step.

Our people make the difference.

At Shogun, instructors are more than teachers — they are experienced mentors with a rich martial arts lineage. Guiding students from beginner to advanced levels, they foster discipline, skill, and achievement in a friendly and motivating environment. From our youngest karate and martial arts students to advanced teens and adults, every class is designed to help students reach their full potential.

Sensei’s Story

Sensei Kong Wing Loh’s martial arts journey began in 1968 in Singapore. Training in Shito-Ryu Karate at 16, building on four years of Judo and boxing from high school. His dedication, discipline, and natural talent quickly distinguished him as one of the region’s most accomplished karate practitioners.

Kong Wing holds an 8th Dan Black Belt in Shito-Ryu Karate and a 6th Dan Black Belt in Okinawan Kobudo. Over decades of training and teaching, he has produced numerous state and national champions, shaping the next generation of martial artists with technical mastery, confidence, and respect.

A celebrated competitor, Sensei Kong represented the Asia Pacific region on the world stage, placing among the top five fighters at the 3rd WUKO Championship in Los Angeles (1975), and competing in the first and second World Karate Championships in Tokyo and Paris (1970, 1972). He won the inaugural Asia Pacific Karate-do Championship and made history as the first to defeat a leading Shotokan fighter in the open weight division.

In 1974, Sensei Kong was appointed by the Sultan of Brunei as a private instructor to the Royal Family, spreading Shito-Ryu Karate to the Brunei Police Department, Youth Department, and International School. After immigrating to Australia in 1980, he continued to build his reputation, winning state and national titles and representing Australia at APUKO in Nagoya in 1983.

Today, as Founder, Chief Instructor, and Program Director of Shogun Martial Arts Centre in Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Sensei Kong combines his rich lineage, competitive experience, and decades of teaching to offer a training experience that is both deeply traditional and remarkably relevant — preserving the art while helping every student unlock their full potential.
